Monday's summer finale of the ABC Family drama
The Fosters ends with a lesbian wedding.
In the show, Sherri Saum (
Rescue Me) and Teri Polo (
Meet the Parents) play domestic partners living in San Diego, California. The couple is coping with raising three children when a wayward teenage girl – a foster child – is added to the family.
A Supreme Court ruling handed down in June paved the way for California to become the 13th state to legalize gay nuptials.
The couple can be seen exchanging vows in a trailer released by ABC Family.
"You are a piece of work," Lena (played by Saum) tells Stef (Polo), "but you're my piece of work."
The Fosters will return with new episodes in January.
