British taxpayers will pay for IVF treatments for lesbian couples

Lesbians in Britain will be allowed to access intra-uterine insemination and IVF treatments under new rules established by the National Health Service.
Health care in Britain is provided by the government (i.e., taxpayers). The Telegraph estimated that these treatments were worth about $13,000.
"How do we reconcile the changes in society and equality of access to healthcare, with the economic predicament?" Dr. Gedis Grudzinskas told the Telegraph.
The new rule also expands fertility treatments to include women up to age 42. Success rates are low for women over 38 -- about 20 percent -- and thus multiple treatments can end up costing tens of thousands of dollars.
