Providence, RI — Rhode Island governor Lincoln D. Chafee signed an executive order today declaring that the state of Rhode Island will recognize same-sex marriages performed elsewhere.

According to the Associated Press, this order will give gay couples the same rights as heterosexual ones when it comes to benefits, which includes health insurance.

Chafee said that while this order was an important step, he would continue to press the state to enact gay marriage.
