Windy City Times awarded prestigious Lisagor

Chicago, IL — The Windy City Times received a coveted Peter Lisagor Award for the WCT AIDS @ 30 series Friday during the Chicago Headline Club's 35th annual award banquet.

    "The AIDS @ 30 series was a labor of love for me to coordinate," said Publisher Tracy Baim. "We had more than two dozen journalists who worked on stories, and dug into our archives for historical materials to share about the impact of AIDS. We are honored that the series has been so well received."

    The AIDS @ 30 series, which began April 2011 and ran through April 2012, included work from staff and freelance writers. The series was also a finalist for the national Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation ( GLAAD ) media awards in the newspaper article category, and lost to the Boston GlobeThe New York Times was also a finalist in that category.

    The Windy City Times was also nominated for a second Peter Lisagor Award for the series "Lakeview crime: The numbers," an investigation of crime statistics in the Lakeview neighborhood. The series was written by Erica Demarest, Kate Sosin and Andrew Davis.

    Founded by the Chicago Headline Club in 1977, the awards are named for Peter Lisagor, who was Washington bureau chief for The Chicago Daily News from 1959 to 1976, and was considered one of the nation's most respected journalists. The awards recognize the best of Chicago's journalism.

    The Chicago Tribune won 13 awards, the Chicago Sun-Times won nine awards, and the Associated Press won four. Lifetime Achievement Awards were given to WMAQ political reporter Mary Ann Ahern and Chicago Sun-Times columnist Mary Mitchell.

    Erica Demarest accepted the prestigious award on behalf of the Windy City Times during the Chicago Headline Club's banquet at the Union Club in downtown Chicago.
