Washington, DC — Herman Cain, Republican presidential candidate, has reiterated his opposition to a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.

Speaking Sunday on NBC's Meet The Press, Cain said he does not favor such an amendment.

But Cain, whose candidacy has surged in recent weeks due largely to his 9-9-9 tax reform plan, has previously made statements that might suggest otherwise.

During a brief interview at the Iowa State Fair with CNN anchor Don Lemon, Cain sounded very much in favor of such a ban.

"Don't rewrite the Constitution, enforce the Constitution, that's what that whole movement is about," Cain said.

"Don't rewrite the Constitution? Even when it comes to gay marriage, same-sex marriage?" Lemon asked.

"Don't rewrite the Constitution," Cain insisted. "Now, there is a difference between rewriting the Constitution and adding something to the Constitution. There is a difference between that, OK?"

Two months before that exchange, Cain said during a New Hampshire debate that he does not support such an amendment.

On Sunday, the former CEO of Godfather's Pizza reiterated that position.

Host David Gregory asked: "Would you seek a constitutional ban for same-sex marriage?"

"I wouldn't seek a constitutional ban for same-sex marriage, but I am pro traditional marriage," Cain said.

"But you would let the states make up their own mind as they're doing now?"

"They would make up their own minds, yes," he answered.
