The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD)'s 16th annual survey found that 2.9 percent of the 650 roles on network and cable television were LGBT characters. That's down from 3.9 percent last season.

FOX had eight LGBT characters, the most of any network.

Network shows noted for positive portrayals of LGBT characters included "Glee," "Ringer," "Modern Family," and "The Good Wife."

On cable TV, HBO's "True Blood" and Showtime's "Shameless" each have six LGBT characters.
