Huntington, New York — St. Anthony's High School, a co-ed Catholic school on Long Island, has told a lesbian student she can't bring her girlfriend to prom.

Angelina Lange, 17, told NBC NY that she wasn't really surprised.

"Maybe this coming to light will help someone down the road," she said philosophically.

Principal Brother Gary told the TV station that allowing Lange to bring a female date would send a "mixed message" to other students.

"Our Catholic faith specifies that marriage involves a man and a woman and our policies on dating must reflect that," Brother Gary said. "We mean no malice or disrespect. But this is an important part of our faith and we must stand by it."
