New York City — The classic novel "From Here to Eternity," which was made into a famous movie starring Burt Lancaster and Frank Sinatra, will soon be re-released with censored gay content restored.

The novel is about life on a U.S. military base in Hawaii in 1941. Author James Jones fought bitterly to keep two references to homosexuality in the book, which was published in 1951, but he was defeated by his editors.

In one scene, a character (played by Frank Sinatra in the movie) talks about prostituting himself and performing oral sex on wealthy men for $5 to $10.

Another scene dealt with an investigation into gay sex on base, the New York Times reported.

Censors also removed several swear words.

Jones died in 1977.

"It's been on my mind for quite a few years, and the right moment just hadn't come up yet," Kaylie Jones, Mr. Jones's daughter, told the New York Times. "My father fought bitterly to hold on to every four-letter word in the manuscript. The publisher was concerned about getting through the censors."

The complete novel will be released on May 10 and will be sold by Amazon.
