The students in the old school "Archie" comics are getting a new classmate-- and he's gay.
"Kevin Keller" will join Archie, Jughead and Veronica in issue No. 202 of "Veronica Comics." In that story (titled "Isn't it Bromantic?"), Veronica tries and fails to get Kevin to fall for her. She's the only character who doesn't understand why her efforts aren't working.
"Everyone seems to know where Kevin is coming from except Veronica," editor-in-chief Victor Gorelick told the Washington Post. "They don't tell Veronica -- they let her stew in it for a while. But he hangs out with Jughead -- they seem to have a connection as far as food goes."
There are no plans for any of the other regular characters at Riverdale High to come out. "The introduction of Kevin is just about keeping the world of Archie Comics current and inclusive," Archie Comics CEO Jon Goldwater told the post. "Archie's hometown of Riverdale has always been a safe world for everyone. It just makes sense to have an openly gay character in Archie comic books."
Archie Comics says none of the staff working on this story line are gay.
This isn't the only "real-world" story line that's being incorporated into the Archie comic books this year; the city of Riverdale is also undergoing a budget crisis and the town is closing down one high school, so the kids at Riverdale are about to inundated with a lot of new students.
