TransLife Project
Chicago House is turning its HIV/AIDS hospice in Edgewater into the Midwest's first housing for transgender individuals. It will become a safe haven for Transgender people while also providing an employment training program.  Transgender people in Chicago have a 20% chance of being homeless and over 60% chance of unemployment.

To learn more about this project you can visit the TransLife Project at the link that follows.

Gay Marriage
The public opinion question for the day in a small conservative town where I grew up in Nebraska is "Where do you stand on gay marriage?" As of now 49% oppose it.

I am a straight transwoman who has the the legal right to get married to a man. Gay people have more rights than trans people but this is one right trans people have that the Gays do not. Non the less I support everyone's happiness and I support my friends and family in the gay community and have a few things I want to say.

 1) Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve, if your going to spout off the Bible take the time to read it, Adam and Eve where never married and in the book of Deuteronomy is says God only considers a marriage valid if the wife is a virgin. Well that makes me laugh because there aren't very many women that should be walking down the aisle in white, so why are we recognizing these marriages? Didn't God create everyone in his own image? Well I hate to tell you but God created Steve too.

2) Gay marriage will destroy the sanctity of marriage! It has all ready been destroyed and it was straight people that did it with a high divorce rate and the average marriage only lasting two years. As a whole, straight people value marriage less than gay people so why do we fight them on it? Statistics go against the stereotype and gay relationships statistically last longer than straight relationships. By the way isn't divorce a sin?

 3) Straight people are making this a religious issue, well I hate to inform those who are naive but there are LGBT Churches in almost every denomination in most all of the major cities in this country. Gay people have been exchanging vows in front of God and getting married in Church's for decades now. It is just not recognized by the government so just because you try to make it illegal doesn't mean your stopping anyone from getting married in front of God. It is two separate issues, the Gays don't care about getting married in a Church because they already do. It is the over 1100 federal human rights that come along with the government recognizing their marriage that they want. The rights straight people have but take for granted because their daily lives are not effected by not having them.

 4) Don't people have better things to do than fight against other peoples happiness and love. Tell me how another persons happiness effects marriage or life negatively?

5)Not everyone is religious or a Christian in this country so stop taking rights away from and suppressing other cultures of people by forcing your religious rhetoric in to our countries government. The thing about human rights is that they are not suppose to be voted on, that's why we call them "rights". There are third world countries more socially evolved than the United States. Last but not least- One culture of people should not decide how another culture of people are suppose to live, because that to me in ungodly...!

All the Best

2012-04-17

A transgender woman has been found apparently murdered in West Garfield Park, Chicago, according to the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs.

Police did not identify the victim, who was found in an alley on the 4500 block of West Jackson on Monday at 3:52 a.m. The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the head.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office could not immediately confirm the identity of the victim but a spokesperson there said there are no "unknown" cases currently within the office.

No one is custody. Area North Detectives are investigating.

Windy City Times will continue to update as details become available. Those with information can emaileditor@windycitymediagroup.com .

National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs news release:

The National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs ( NCAVP ) has learned of the murder of a transgender woman, found shot to death on Monday, April 16th in West Garfield Park in Chicago.www.chicago.cbslocal.com/2012/04/16/man-found-shot-to-death-in-west-garfield-park/ .

NCAVP encourages anyone who has experienced violence to contact a local anti-violence program for support and to document this violence.
