Organizing for Change
CHICAGO (March 13)-- Equal rights activists, politicians, and community leaders from organizations all over the Midwest arrived in Chicago for the "Unite and Fight Conference". Their mission: To construct a new action-network, uniting various social justice organizations under one title, coined "[INSERT NAME OF NEW UMBRELLA ORG]". The conference featured workshops and guest speakers, including Lt. Dan Choi, the U.S. Army officer whose pending discharge from the military is a result of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell (DADT)" policy; the only federal law that outlaws openly gay people from serving. DADT has been especially damaging for soldiers like Lt. Choi, as well as, former Army Specialist, Jeremiah Duncan, who told OutWorld.TV that he was investigated and later forced to admit that he was gay, or receive a dishonorable discharge. Conference members say that, by working together, they intend to push for a swifter repeal of DADT and also lobby for more equitable treatment of LGBT people nationwide.
