Pinching Pennies

Get ready to pinch your pennies. On today's show we've got Jay Shaff- gay photographer and long term tightwad here to share with us his quick and easy tips on saving money and surviving the downturn in the economy.
Listen how you can save money on food, transportation, socializing and utilities- how can you make the most of what you got.
If you hang out in gay bars in Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood, also known as Boystown, you've probably seen Jay clicking away. Jay finds the best hunks, skunks and drunks to feature in his photo blog on ChicagoPride.com.
He also discovered supermodel Ronnie Kroell and was instrumental in helping him ignite his modeling career. In case you don't remember who Ronnie is, he was the runner up in Bravo's last spring reality tv show, Make Me a Supermodel. Ronnie developed an intense friendship with one of his fellow contestants, who claimed to be straight but many speculated went much further than just a "bromance."
What's it like taking pictures of hunky gay men in bars? Who will be our next Chicago gay supermodel? Jay shares it all.
Hop abroad the gay taxi! A Russian cab company now offers gay-friendly cab rides with hopes of reducing violence to gay men in Moscow.
The regular looking cabs are being offered by a private company after openly violent attacks and abuse against gays have become more acceptable in Russia. Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov repeatedly bans Gay Pride events and last year called gay people "Satanic."
[Note: listen to our interview with Russian gay rights activist Nikolai Alexeyev
in "From Russia with Love."]
Sorry kids, Kosmo the Clown has AIDS. Children's writer Glenn Huser has written a dark story for kids about a clown dying from AIDS in the book, Touch of the Clown. I know, funny title. The story revolves a around a little girl that has had more trials and tribulations than Oliver Twist. Her parents are drunks, her sister is missing a kidney and her dad won't let her go to clown college. She goes anyway and befriends the clown only to watch him die. It's recommended for grades 5-9.
An Italian man holds a vigil for his girlfriend who leaves him to join a nunnery. The poor guy has camped outside the convent with banners and signs imploring her to come back, but the reverend mother has asked him to go away. Sounds like he got the idea from watching the movie musical "Sound of Music."
We've got the skinny on Republican V.P. nominee Sarah Palin's tips on staying fit and eating healthy. Caribou Barbie eats lots of wild Alaskan seafood, moose burgers and she runs three miles every other day. She even runs at midnight if it's light out.
Digitally delicious- Feast of Fools.

I'm a jew honey! I already know all about being a tightwad! LOL
And the porn you're thinking of is The Bait Bus...where they get a str8 guy on the bus make him think he's getting a woman and gets a guy!
My money saving tips? LOL If I could save money I would!
But I've learned that
1) If you're going to put gas in your car do it in the morning.....by the time you get off work the price could have jumped
2) You can buy a lot of generic groceries and they taste just as good
3) If you go out, never ever leave home without a 7-up bottle with your favorite cocktail! Drink it up before you get to the bar and you probably only have to buy one or two drinks!

Some days you just feel like browsing back on those oldies but goodies. On today's show our pal Michael Lehet joins us to reminisce on the golden moments of the internet, before viral videos, podcasts and blogs captured our heart and minds, the glory days of Web 1.0.
Oh that great phenomena that amused us all at the turn of the century. You remember it don't you? Dancing Hamsters, Bonsai Kittens, Bert is Evil, Fat Chicks in Party Hats, the British Coffee Pot Webcam and Joe Spark's Radiskull and Devil Doll series captured a huge audience without ANY video at all.
The High Fructose Corn Syrup lobby must be sweating it because they launched an ad campaign on how nobody can seem to explain why this sweetener is bad for you. We can, and we explain why this controversial sweetener is so pervasive yet toxic on today's show.

Today Apple is announcing some juicy new products included the rumored new fancy shmancy iTunes, the application you all use to listen to our show. Good thing, since the world might end on Wednesday.
The Large Hadron Collider, a 17 mile long doughnut-shaped tunnel that will smash sub-atomic particles together at nearly the speed of light will be activated this Wednesday by the European Organization for Nuclear Research. Some scientists are raising the alarm that the experiment might result in devastating phenomena, including quasars and black holes which might wipe out not only all life on earth, but the globe itself. What can we do to protect ourselves?
We think you'll probably be so involved with your new iPod touch you won't notice the world has ended and probably just go about your business.
One real thing that could end life as we know it is global warming and its a good thing that "going green" is all the rage right now. Everyone is doing their part to save the environment, even polar bears!
Green-colored polar bears are drawing questions from puzzled visitors at a Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens in central Japan as three normally white polar bears changed their color in July after swimming in a pond with an overgrowth of algae.
Zoo officials say high temperatures in July and August and less-frequent water changes because of conservation efforts caused an algae growth in the bear pond and safety moat. The bears are expected to return to their natural color when the algae growth subsides in November.
How to clock your favorite lady's little friend, Green feminine hygiene products, Google's ocean powered floating servers and Bed Bath and Beyond's employee's lack of common sense.
This podcast just might save your life during an apocalypse people- Feast of Fools.

For 20 years, the AIDS Legal Council of Chicago (ALCC) has been fighting to protect the legal rights of not just people with HIV, but all of us with regards to this challenging sexually transmitted disease.
On today's show Justin Hayford, the case manager for the AIDS Legal Council of Chicago join us to talk about HIV, AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases and its legal ramifications.
Will we eventually get access to healthcare regardless of the money we make? Does my doctor have a right to tell my family about my HIV status? What are some of the common misconceptions people make when they first get diagnosed for HIV infection?
Although some of you may not be HIV positive, you should still listen to find out what your rights to privacy are when you get tested.
ALCC spends a lot of time and money helping people fight discrimination in employment and health care, and they also provide assistance for infected folks with insurance issues. But they need your help.
LOSE YOURSELF IN THE RHYTHM OF BRAZIL.
Come join us on Wednesday, Sept. 10 from 6-8:30 PM at Sidetrack in Chicago for a delightful Brazilian themed fundraier for the Council. Celebrating 20 years of preserving, promoting and protecting the legal rights of people with HIV/AIDS.
See you there!

And you thought Amy Winehouse had problems. After an intensive three-year recovery program, a heroin addicted elephant from a Chinese zoo has finally recovered with his battle with the drug. Poachers fed the elephant bananas laced with heroin as bait and to pacify the creature. Although he goes by the name of Xiguang, we'd love to nickname the drugged up pachyderm Billie Holiday, Amy Winehouse or Boy George. It's easy to go to rehab when you live in a zoo.
If only all religious fundamentalists were this generous. Jay Rogers, a militant anti-abortionist from Florida has been praying for the Lord Almighty to snuff out the 2008 Republican Presidential candidate John McCain. Why? So his fundie V.P. baby-momma Sarah Palin will be President of the U.S.A. and usher in a New World Odor of pine-scented insanity.
The Olympic gold medalist superstar Michael Phelps was spotted last week in a strip bar in Las Vegas grabbing some hot female dance's butt. Is this a way of him trying to deny rumors of him being gay? Please, leave the guy alone. He's been swimming his heart out for the past decade, and now he wants a little tail, let him have his fun. Just remember Michael- what happens in Vegas doesn't always stay in Vegas. So use a condom, ok?
Fresh, funny and fabulous- Feast of Fools.

The Legacy of Liberace
CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE SHOW | SUBSCRIBE ON iTUNES
Put on your rhinestone covered headphones, we've got a dazzling show for you today! Is it possible to put a million rhinestones into this podcast?
From Las Vegas, we salute one of the great ones, Liberace- the flamboyant musician who's showbiz style and ornate sensibilities influence Las Vegas and pop music to this very day.
As a young gay kid I was always fascinated by this extravagant piano player I saw on TV, and even once made rings out of aluminum foil to pretend I was Liberace. My piano teacher Carol Ortiz had dozens of piano shaped knick-knacks in her home, and even a clock on the wall shaped like a piano. My dad even helped me make a grand piano shaped chocolate cake to celebrate graduating book 2 in the Suzuki Method.
Join us as we talk to the President of the Liberace Foundation Darin Hollingsworth from inside the Liberace Museum about the man behind all the glitz and glamor.
What a place! In what can be best described as an ALL-Liberace themed strip mall, just minutes away from the main drive in Las Vegas you can see in person all of Liberace's over the top costumes, cars and pianos and learn more about this complex man who made such an impact on showbusiness today.
Click here for photos taken from the Liberace Museum.
Liberace earned the nickname "Mr. Showman" in part because of his outrageous, shiny and beautiful costumes. They were a show into themselves. He worked with many fabulous designers and furriers to achieve that over-the-top, rococo gilded lily style. Today the museum lovingly cares for many of these expensive and very heavy costumes which they hope to maintain for future generations to enjoy.
Did you know that Liberace influenced Elvis' sense of showmanship? Well, you didn't think Elvis came up with the gold suit and rhinestone studded cape all on his own did you? Liberace showed him how it was done and what it took to dazzle an audience.
Liberace was often the butt of jokes but he really was in on the humor. He use to joke that he "laughed all the way to the bank." And then well into his career he changed it to "you remember that bank I use to laugh all the way too? Well, I bought it." The man had some serious coin.
He also had quite a taste for food and was known to put out quite a spread. Food was important for him and he says he kept three different sizes of clothing- thin, fat and impossible. The Liberace Foundation has put a cookbook, Joy of Liberace: Retro Recipes from America's Kitchiest Kitchen, which contains some of his favorite recipes. It's worth getting just for the kitsch appeal. Do we see a Liberace themed dinner party in your future?
Liberace never disclosed his sexuality but he lived and died in a different era. Darrin, President of the Liberace Foundation, points out that when he died in 1986 from AIDS, Elton John was married to a woman. How's that for putting it in perspective?
Through all the sparkles of the rhinestones and the jewels, the legacy of Liberace that shines the brightest is the Liberace Scholarship for the creative and performing arts. Liberace felt he owed his success to the scholarships he received as a youth. To express his appreciation and to further the arts, the foundation has provided over $5 million in scholarship grants to more than 2200 students at 110 colleges and universities.
Remember kids, as Liberace once said- "nobody will believe in you unless you believe in yourself."
