Since at least the beginning of 2011, the Northalsted Business Alliance ("Alliance") has been offerring a gift card program aimed at luring shoppers to the Boystown area. It works just like you would think: buy a gift card from the Alliance and the card can be used just like cash at a variety of locations in Boystown, where you can buy everything from cocktails to lube to burritos (in that order) within a matter of minutes.
Every so often the Alliance has an added value promotion, where an extra amount of cash is added to the card above and beyond the amount you paid for the card. Starting today November 17 and running until supplies run out all cards bought from the Alliance will have a 20% bonus added to the card. So if you buy a gift card for $100, you will get a gift card loaded with $120.
Sweet deal, right? The only catch is that supplies are limited, and who knows how long this deal will be offered. Speaking from personal experience, the last time the Alliance had this added value deal, I guess they reached their quota before I tried to buy a card, because I missed out. Get your cards here, where you can also find the list of participating Boystown businesses.

The Lakeview East Festival of the Arts is taking place this weekend on Broadway from Belmont to Roscoe. The Festival will be open to the public on Saturday, September 10 from 10am-6pm, and on Sunday, September 11 from 10am-5pm. A $5 suggested donation is requested for entry, which benefits the Lakeview East Chamber of Commerce and the programs they support.
The Festival will feature over 150 juried artists exhibiting artwork from a variety of categories, including photography, printmaking, mixed media, ceramics, clay, collage, fiber, glass, sculpture, furniture, jewelry, and more, all of which will be available for sale.
The Festival will also include the fascinating urban garden, which is a landscaping/sculptural display that will be integrated into Broadway, roughly between Stratford and Roscoe.
And last but not least, what festival would be complete without music, food, and a variety of adult beverages, all of which will be available at the Festival in plentiful supply.

Ald. Tom Tunney has instituted a pilot parking ban, effective immediately and until further notice, on Halsted from Belmont to Buckingham (both sides), and on Belmont from Clark to Halsted (both sides). The ban will be in force on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights from 12am-5am (for you sticklers, that's actually Saturday, Sunday, and Monday mornings from 12am-5am). No Parking signs will be posted along these routes.
According to Tunney, his office was presented with a signed petition from area residents requesting that a parking ban be instituted in order to curb illegal activity observed to be occurring in vehicles and in the streets on these weekend nights. This illegal activity allegedly includes public drinking, drug use, and excessive noise. The pilot ban is also supposed to provide police officers a better line of sight.
Tunney's office welcomes comments and observations on this pilot parking ban, which can be emailed to ward44@cityofchicago.org

Babes With Blades Theatre Company presents the comedy "The Double," written byBarbara Lhota, which is showing at The Lincoln Square Theatre, 4754 N Leavitt. The play is set in the 1940s and features lesbian and gay characters dealing with gender and sexual identity issues in this repressive time period. Overall, the play is a screwball comedy that weaves together multiple love stories and includes swing dancing, old-movie magic, swashbuckling, and homages to classics like Some Like It Hot, Singing in the Rain, and every Rosalind Russell film. "The Double" was a semi-finalist in Pride Films & Plays Women's Work category.
From the press release: "Screwball comedy meets swashbuckler in this world-premiere tribute to Cyrano de Bergerac and the 1940's. The play centers on Minnie, an actress-stage combatant who is reunited with her childhood crush, the B-Movie starlet, Olivia Wood. Along the way, she meets the ery talented, very handsome Adrian Young who also seems to be harboring a bit of a secret. The play examines gender and sexual strictures of the period. Featuring single sword and unarmed combat, "The Double" promises laughter, love, and derring-do."
"The Double" runs Thursday - Saturday from August 25 - September 24. There will be matinees at 2pm on Saturday, September 3, 10 and 17.
Tickets are normally $20 each for regular admission, and $12 each for students and seniors, which can be purchased here. However, you can enter the discount code "blog" (without quotes) for 2-for-1 tickets.

I know this window display has been up for a while now, but life has been hectic lately.
"Starving Artist" is the newest window display by Lee Kay Graphics at Batteries Not Included (BNI) in Boystown.
According to Lee Kay, the inspiration for this display came from a tabloid cover a few years ago with the headline "Make Dolly Eat!" He thought the headline (not the eating disorder) was hilarious and decided to use the idea in the BNI window for Market Days in 2008. As Lee Kay described it, "it just all worked for a BNI 'country' kind of window, 'good clean barnyard fun' & all ... Even kids like milkin' cows!"
The original video from the Market Days 2008 window display can be viewed here. You can follow Lee Kay on Twitter or on his YouTube channel.
