If you've ever wanted to learn how to paint . . . while drinking . . . all in the name of charity . . . have we got the perfect place for you.
Arts n Spirits is holding a Pride weekend kick-off event on Thursday June 23, with a portion of the proceeds being donated to the Howard Brown Health Center. You bring the drinks (BYOB), and they provide the art instruction and materials.
The mission of Arts n Spirits is to make the creation and enjoyment of art accessible to those who believe they have little or no artistic talent. In my case there is no artistic talent, and it's not merely a belief. However, I'm sure my BYObeverage of choice would help with that perception.
At this event, you will learn how to paint the featured artwork of the night, which in this case is a peacock, while sipping your favorite beverage in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. Arts n Spirits gives step-by-step instructions to create the painting, and at the end of the night you can take your creation home.
Tickets are $40 per person and can be purchased here (with a portion going to Howard Brown!).

If you've ever been to the Chicago Pride Parade before, you know that texting and calling on your cell phone can be quite a challenge. It's not because your motor skills have been impaired from standing on the sidewalk all morning sipping appletinis out of discrete plastic cups, it's because the nearly 500,000 people attending the Parade put an enormous strain on the cell networks.
This year, it seems, things will be different, at least for some subscribers.
According to ChicagoPride.com, AT&T will be temporarily increasing its network capacity for this year's Pride Parade by deploying cell on wheels (COWs), which are mobile cell towers capable of handling extra voice, data, and Wi-Fi traffic. COWs have found widespread use at a variety of highly-attended events around the country, including Super Bowls, music festivals, and even the Obama inauguration a few years ago.
AT&T also claims to have upgraded all of their cell sites along the Parade route to handle a larger amount of wireless traffic, and has even installed temporary Wi-Fi equipment on the rooftops of some businesses on Halsted, including Gerber Collision & Glass and Roscoe's, in order to provide customers with additional Wi-Fi hot spots.
This is great news for AT&T subscribers, but those of you that are well-versed in the shortcomings of AT&T's network on a normal (non-Pride) day in Chicago might ask, "Why can't AT&T have good network coverage all of the time?"
Well, AT&T is working on it. They're investing heavily in faster networks, and they're even attempting to buy out other carriers to more quickly bolster their infrastructure.
As someone somewhere once said, "Good things come to those who wait for the merger to go through," or something like that.
